What is Women's Health Physiotherapy?

Women's Health Physiotherapy is a specialized practice that assesses and treats conditions related to the female pelvic floor, the reproductive system, and the profound physiological changes that occur during life stages such as pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause. It moves beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to provide targeted, often life-changing care for issues that are common, but not normal.

How Does It Work? (The Physiotherapy Process)

Our approach is evidence-based, compassionate, and highly specific. It works through several key steps:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: This is the cornerstone. It includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and goals. For pelvic health conditions, this may include an external and/or internal (vaginal or rectal) assessment of the pelvic floor muscles with your fully informed consent. This allows us to directly assess muscle tone, strength, coordination, and any areas of tenderness.
  • Individualized Treatment Plan: Based on the assessment, we create a personalized plan. This is not just about "Kegels." Treatments are multifaceted and can include:
    • Pelvic Floor Muscle Re-training: Teaching you how to correctly contract and relax these muscles, using biofeedback for precision.
    • Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to release tight muscles, fascia, and scar tissue (e.g., from C-sections or episiotomies).
    • Real-Time Ultrasound: Using a small ultrasound probe on your abdomen to visually guide the correct activation of your deep core muscles.
    • Education and Lifestyle Advice: On bladder/bowel habits, posture, and lifting techniques.
    • Exercise Prescription: Providing safe and effective exercises to strengthen your core, glutes, and back in an integrated way.
