What is a Physiotherapy Weight Management Program?

It is a structured, supervised, and individualized exercise program with the primary goals of increasing your daily energy expenditure, improving your functional strength for daily activities, and managing weight-related musculoskeletal conditions. Our role is to provide a safe and effective exercise prescription for individuals for whom standard gym routines may be intimidating, painful, or unsafe.

How Does It Work? (The Physiotherapy Process)

Our approach is centered on creating a sustainable and pain-free foundation for physical activity.

  • Comprehensive Movement Assessment: We begin by assessing your posture, joint mobility, muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness, and any movement imbalances or areas of pain. This helps us identify your specific barriers to exercise.
  • Individualized Exercise Prescription: We design a program based on your unique needs, which may include:
    • Low-Impact Cardiovascular Training: Using modalities like stationary bikes, aquatic therapy, or elliptical trainers to burn calories without excessive stress on the joints.
    • Foundational Strength Training: Focusing on compound movements that target large muscle groups to build metabolically active muscle tissue and improve functional strength for tasks like getting up from a chair or climbing stairs.
    • Mobility and Flexibility Work: Addressing joint stiffness to improve movement efficiency and reduce discomfort.
    • Education on Pacing and Pain Management: Teaching you how to gradually increase activity levels without causing injury or flare-ups of existing conditions.
  • Progressive Overload and Support: We progressively and safely increase the intensity, duration, and complexity of your exercises as your fitness improves, providing motivation and ensuring your technique is correct to prevent injury.

Specific Conditions Managed with a Physiotherapy-Led Program

This approach is specifically beneficial for managing and treating weight-related musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Degenerative Joint Disease (Osteoarthritis): Particularly of the knees, hips, and lower back. Weight loss reduces joint loading, and strengthening supports the joints, significantly reducing pain and improving function.
  • Chronic Low Back Pain: Strengthening the core and glutes to provide better spinal support and reduce strain.
  • Tendinopathies: Conditions like Achilles tendinopathy or plantar fasciitis, where reduced body weight decreases the tensile load on the tendon.
  • General Deconditioning and Musculoskeletal Weakness: Re-building a base level of fitness and strength to safely perform activities of daily living.
  • Pre- and Post-Bariatric Surgery Rehabilitation: Preparing the body for surgery and guiding a safe return to exercise afterward to maximize and maintain long-term results
