Pre and post surgical Rehab

What is Pre and Post Surgical Rehabilitation?

It is a specialized physiotherapy pathway that prepares your body for surgery and guides it through a structured recovery process afterward.

  • Pre-Habilitation ("Prehab"): This is the training you do before your operation. The goal is to enter surgery in the strongest possible physical and mental state.
  • Post-Surgical Rehabilitation ("Rehab"): This is the guided recovery process after surgery, designed to restore your strength, mobility, and function safely and effectively.

Think of it like this: Prehab is about building a strong foundation for your house, while Rehab is the careful, phased process of rebuilding it after a storm. Both are essential for a durable and successful result.

How Does It Work?

The process is a continuous journey, tailored to your specific surgery and personal goals.

Phase 1: Pre-Surgical Rehab (Prehab)

  • Education & Expectation Management: We explain the surgical procedure and what to expect during recovery. We teach you post-operative exercises and how to use crutches or other aids if needed.
  • Building a Foundation: We focus on strengthening the muscles around the affected joint, maintaining your range of motion, and improving your overall fitness. A stronger body going into surgery has been shown to lead to a faster, less painful recovery.
  • Pain & Inflammation Reduction: We use techniques to manage your pre-existing pain and swelling, creating a better starting point for healing.

Phase 2: Post-Surgical Rehab

This is a progressive, phased approach:

  • Early Phase: Focuses on controlling post-operative pain and swelling, protecting the surgical repair, and restoring basic, safe movements as guided by your surgeon's protocol.
  • Middle Phase: We gradually introduce more specific exercises to restore full range of motion, rebuild muscle strength, and begin re-training proprioception (your joint's sense of position).
  • Late Phase: This is about returning to your life and activities. We focus on high-level strength, power, endurance, and sport-specific or job-specific functional retraining.
  • Return to Activity: The final step is a structured and monitored return to your desired activities, ensuring your body is truly ready for the demands you place on it.

Conditions Treated with Pre & Post Surgical Rehab

This approach is crucial for a wide range of orthopedic and other surgeries, including:

  • Joint Replacements: Total hip, knee, and shoulder replacements.
  • Ligament Reconstructions: ACL reconstruction in the knee, ankle ligament repairs.
  • Tendon Repairs: Rotator cuff repair in the shoulder, Achilles tendon repair.
  • Fracture Fixations: Rehabilitation following surgical repair of broken bones.
  • Spinal Surgeries: Such as discectomy, laminectomy, or spinal fusion.
  • Arthroscopic Procedures: Including meniscectomy or meniscal repair in the knee, and labral repairs in the shoulder or hip.
